  • Melco recently celebrated its fifth year of operating Cyprus’ first authorized casino

Melco Resorts & Entertainment just marked its fifth year of operations in Cyprus, with its City of Dreams Mediterranean integrated resort just months away from launching. The property will give a massive boost to Cyprus’ tourism industry, as Melco aims to help transform the country into a global tourist, entertainment, and business destination.

Melco Celebrates 5th Anniversary in Cyprus

In 2018, Melco obtained an exclusive 15-year license to run the first authorized casino in Cyprus. Since that year, it has been operating a temporary casino in Limassol along with three satellite casinos located in Paphos, Nicosia, and Ayia Napa, while the City of Dreams Mediterranean is still being developed.

The casino operator recently celebrated its fifth anniversary in Cyprus with an event honoring its employees. The company awarded commemorative plates to dozens of staff, recognizing their contribution to the overall success of Melco’s operations in Cyprus over the last five years.

During the event, Grant Johnson, Melco’s senior vice president of casino sales and marketing, thanked the company’s staff and employees for helping the organization grow. He also expressed Melco’s commitment to creating a sustainable future for Cyprus and developing its tourism industry.

City of Dreams Mediterranean to Bolster Cyprus’ Tourism Sector

Recognizing Melco’s role in the development of the country’s tourism sector, Johnson said they will work tirelessly and concentrate their efforts on making Cyprus a global tourist, entertainment, and business destination. The eventual opening of the City of Dreams Mediterranean, the largest integrated resort in Europe, will help make that happen.

The government of Cyprus acknowledges the positive impact an integrated resort can have on the country’s tourism sector, with ex-president Nicos Anastasiades previously saying the development of a multi-thematic resort has always been a government goal because of its potential to increase tourist numbers, create new jobs, and improve the country’s economy.

Anastasiades made the comments in February this year during a special preview event held at the City of Dreams Mediterranean site in Limassol. Anastasiades, who was still president of Cyprus at that time, was given a tour of the integrated resort. He said the property would create new prospects that would strengthen Cyprus’ position on the global tourism map. The event was also attended by Melco Chairman and CEO Lawrence Ho.

The City of Dreams Mediterranean integrated resort, which is expected to open in the second quarter of 2023, will feature an 80,000-square-foot casino floor with blackjack tables and slot machines present, a 14-storey, 500-room luxury hotel, approximately 10,000 square meters of MICE space, a family adventure park, and other non-gaming facilities.
