Most casino operators around the world are being conservative with their spending right now as they have suffered a massive hit in gross gaming revenues (GGR) due to the COVID-19 pandemic that brought the land based casino industry to a standstill.
However, some of the top casino operators like Melco Resorts and Entertainment Ltd are not afraid to invest in their properties as they are confident the gaming industry will bounce back.
Studio City Macau
Melco Resorts and Entertainment Ltd which is the majority owner in Macau’s Studio City casino resort have confirmed that they are making steady progress with their Studio City Phase 2 project. David Sisk, COO for Melco Resorts said Phase 2 of Studio City was on track for a December 2022 opening.
Melco Resorts is investing $1.3 billion to develop Studio City Phase 2 which will focus on non-gaming activities. While most casinos in Macau focus on gaming activities, the Macau government has called for gaming operators to shift their focus from gaming to non-gaming as they don’t want Macau to go under the tag of a gambler’s paradise.
There is a push to make Macau more family friendly and the government wants Macau’s casinos to do their part to make this happen. Melco Resorts is expressing its commitment to this policy as 99 percent of Studio City Phase 2 will be dedicated to non-gaming activities.
The one percent of gaming activities will focus on premier gamblers who have a tendency to spend more at the live gaming tables than regular patrons.
Studio City Phase 2 will cover a total of 250,000 square metres of total floor area which will include a retail shopping center that will cover 21,000 sq. metres and a gaming floor of 2,300 sq. ms. Two luxury hotels will also be part of the Phase 2 project and a total of 900 hotel rooms will be available between the two hotels.
Some of the other non-gaming activities will include a special indoor play area for children, an indoor water park which is being labelled as one of the biggest water parks in Asia and a multi-screen cinema.
Studio City Phase 2 is set for a December 27, 2022 grand opening!
